The 8 Guitar Chords Every Beginner Should Learn First

Most songs you want to play are built from a handful of open chords. Learn these eight in the right order and you will be able to play along with thousands of songs long before your fingers stop hurting.

Start with the two-finger chords

E minor and A minor each need only two fingers, which makes them the fastest way to hear something musical. Play them until placing your fingers feels automatic rather than something you have to look at.

  • Em — two fingers, all six strings ring
  • Am — two fingers, avoid the low E string

Add the four open favourites

C, G, D and A are the backbone of popular music. Each introduces one new skill: C stretches your fingers, G uses three strings open, D keeps your hand compact, and A stacks three fingers in a row.

Expect these to buzz at first. Buzz is usually a finger resting on a neighbouring string, not a weak hand.

Then E and D minor

E major and D minor round out the set and appear constantly alongside the others. With eight chords you can already play in the keys of G, C, D and A minor.

Practise changes, not shapes

The real beginner hurdle is switching chords in time. Choose two chords and change between them once per beat, then once per bar, then at a slow song tempo.

Keep a steady strum going even if a chord lands late. A wrong note in time sounds far better than a correct chord after a pause.
